L. Marcius Philippus, (c.56 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, (3.72 g), obv. Ancus Marcius head to right, [ANCVS] and lituus below and to left, dotted border, rev. PHILIPPVS behind equestrian statue to right on an arcade of five arches, within A Q V A MAR, flower below horse, (S.382, Cr.425/1, Syd.919a, RSC Marcia 28). Off centred obverse and slightly so on reverse, otherwise very fine.

L. Marcius Philippus was the step-father of Gaius Octavius (later Augustus). His family claimed descent from Ancus Marcius the fourth king of Rome and his ancestor Q. Marcius Rex constructed the aqueduct known as the Aqua Marcia. It appears on the reverse of this coin.
