L. Manlius Torquatus for L.Sulla IMP., (82 B.C.), silver denarius, Mint moving with Sulla, (3.81 g), obv. helmeted head of Roma to right, before L.MANLI, behind PR[O Q], dotted border, rev. Sulla in walking quadriga to right with Victory flying above crowning him, below in exergue [L]. SVLLA. IMP, dotted border, (S.286, C.367/5, Syd 757a, BMC 11 (East), RSC Manlia 5). Toned, nearly extremely fine.

Ex Dr V.J.A. Flynn Collection and previously from Noble Numismatics Sale 107 (lot 3627) and coming from an old Hungarian collection. Also former C. Pitchfork Collection and previously from Glendinings, London, (lot 53 part).
Lucius Manlius Torquatus was proquaestor to L.Sulla during the Mithradatic war and the type represents a triumph granted to the great imperator.
