Thessaly, Thessalian Confederacy or League, silver stater or double victoriatus (one and a half denarii), 196-146 B.C., (BCD suggests mid-late 1st century B.C.), (6.32 g), Italos and Diokles, magistrates, struck at Larissa mint, obv. head of Zeus right, crowned with a laureate wreath in oak across, **ITALOU* behind, Rev. **QESSA* to left, **LWN* to right, the Thessalian Pallas, Athena Itonia advancing right, brandishing spear and holding shield, above **DIO KLH[S]*, N I to left and right of Athena legs, plain below shield and in exergue, (cf.S.2233, Triton XV 874.4, SNG Cop. 277 [Pl.6], McClean 4797 [p.231, cf.Pl.178]). Bright and extremely fine, rare.
