Sicily, Syracuse, Agathokles, (317-289 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (15.98 g), obv. head of Artemis-Arethusa (Persephone) to left, surrounded by three dolphins, with dotted border, wearing wreath of barley [NK] below, rev. galloping quadriga driven left by charioteer holding goad, above triskeles, in exergue **[SU]RAKOSIW[N] over AN monogram, (S.971, Ierardi, No.39 (same dies, ANS AJN 7-8, p.44], Kraay/Hirmer 134 [similar dies], SNG Delepierre 702 [same obverse die], SNG Lloyd 1477 [same obverse die], SNG ANS 639 [same obverse die]). Grey tone, some tooling and obverse porosity, otherwise very fine and rare.
Ex Allan Sutherland Collection and previously from Wayte Raymond New York, with packet marked $15 and cost £5.5.0 (dated 1933) and Noble Numismatics Sale 70 (lot 3110).
