Midway Island is a small atoll in the North Pacific Ocean one-third of the way between Honolulu and Tokyo and was the location of a U.S. base during WWII. A massive sea battle was fought at Midway during WWII and the resultant crushing defeat of the Japanese Navy by the US Navy was a turning point of the war in the Pacific.
