Description
School medal, 1848, in silver being a plain disc fitted into a raised edge frame (42.5mm), with a suspension loop, obverse inscribed in running script in the centre, '1st Class,/Matilda White,/June 13th' and in upright figures, '1848.', and around the edge in running script, 'The future recollection will be pleasing', on the reverse in the centre is inscribed in running script, 'Learning/is sometimes bitter,/but its fruit/is sweet.'. Cleaned, otherwise fine.
Possibly attributable to Rev Mr White who arrived in Tasmania in September 1838. He was an educator and in 1848 he was sub-warden of Launceston Grammar School and in June 1848 he was appointed sub-warden of Christ's College, Tasmania. As no school is mentioned on the medal above, it is possible that Rev White, who had at least two children, gave the medal to his daughter when she commenced 1st Class.
