Edward the Confessor, (1042-1066), silver penny, PACX type, London mint, issued 1042-1044, obv. diademed bust to left, in front holding a sceptre, rev. voided long cross ending at legends, with PAXX arranged in angles, annulet in centre, around +EADPOLD ON LVND (Eadwold of London), (S.1172, North 814, BMC type IV, Br.4 var., SCBI Norweb 205 [This Coin], Carlyon-Britton Num. Chron. 1905, Pl.vii, 8 [This Coin], Dolley Num. Chron. 1966, p.215 [This Coin] listed). Extremely fine and very rare with PAXX on reverse.

Ex. Major P.W.P. Carlyon-Britton (not in sale), R.C. Lockett (lot 805 part) collections, Seaby Coin and Medal Bulletin October 1956 (8330) and E.P. Armitage Collection bought by Spink, May 1960, and Norweb Collections (Spink London, Sale 45 [lot 84]). $$ Dolley suggests that all PAXX coins belong to the very outset of the emission of this type.
