The Lawn Tennis Hard Court Championships of Great Britain, medal in gold (9ct, 26.6gms, 38mm) by Fattorini & Sons Ltd, London, inscribed on rev. '1933 / Men's doubles / champions / J.CRAWFORD / D.P.TURNBULL'. In case of issue. Nearly uncirculated.
Jack Crawford, from N.S.W. won the Australian junior singles in 1926 at age 17, he also won the N.S.W. & Queensland singles and with H.Hopman won a number of doubles titles. His career was long, nine Davis Cup teams, four Australian singles (1931, 1932, 1933, 1935) and four doubles, six N.S.W. singles and ten doubles, six Victorian singles and six doubles. Overseas he beat Henri Cochet to become the first foreigner to win the French singles (1933) and he also won a doubles and a mixed. At Wimbledon he won the 1933 singles - considered by many to have been the greatest final ever played and again won a doubles and a mixed, along with his 1933 Australian singles title this left him as the world's first 3/4 Grand Slam winner Don Turnbull, a South Australian won the Australian junior doubles in 1930, was a Davis Cup player from 1933-35 and won the Australian doubles in 1936 & 1937.
