Memorial Plaque WWI, named to John Lowery, 84 in front of lion's back leg and WA (Woolwich Acton) mark on reverse. Extremely fine.

John Joseph Lowery, butcher, age 18, born at Bendigo, Vic; Enl.18Jun1915 at Melbourne, Vic, previous service of 4 years with Senior Cadets at Bendigo attaining rank of Sgt; to Gallipoli 25Oct1915; L/Cpl 21Aug1916, T/Cpl 01Feb1917, Cpl 28Mar1917, L/Sgt 02May1917; KIA 02Oct1917 at Belgium - M.Gun Sgt Joe Lowery took part in an attack on the German lines at Broodseinde on 2.10.17. He reached the objective safely but was killed by enemy shell-fire while digging in near Zonnebeke Ridge, death being instantaneous. He was buried by his comrades in the vicinity of the trench and a cross was erected over the grave. Commemorated at Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
