Description
K&S (Kirkcaldie & Stains) (Wellington), 1D check, uniface, in copper (26mm), no maker, incuse lettering, central hole (G.31a; TMR.p174). Extremely fine and rare.
Little is known about the issue. Roker suggests that the checks may have been used in the 1930s for the toilet facilities at the Kirkcaldie & Stains store, or possibly as staff discount tokens. The penny was possibly used as a lavatory token, although it is also feasible that both denominations were 'canteen' tokens used in the tearooms of the store from 1898.
