John William Lindt was born in Germany in 1845. He made his way to Australia when he was 17 and headed for the outback. He later started a photographic studio and is famous for his book, Picturesque New Guinea, which he published as a tribute to Queen Victoria and for his many photographs of native Australians taken in the Grafton, Clarence River area in the 1860s and 1870s.
