Centennial International Exhibition, Melbourne, 1888, in silver (51mm) by Melbourne Mint - Stokes & Martin (C.1888/8) edge inscribed, 'The Hon. James Service M.L.C.'. Edge nick and bump, hairlines, otherwise very fine.
James Service was born at Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland in 1823 and emigrated to Victoria when 30 years of age. He entered the Victorian Parliament in 1857 and became Minister for Lands in 1859. He was the leader of the free trade party and was a staunch advocate of colonial federation. In 1886 he retired from political life, but was again elected in 1888. He was a member of the Federation Convention in 1891.He died on 12 April 1899 at Melbourne.
