World medals, Germany, commemorative of Ernst Thalmann (1886-1944), silver (22.66g), Magdeburg; East German for service as a reserve in the People's Army, base metal 35mm; Friedrich Ludwig Jahn 1778-1852, struck in 1973 East Germany Olympics, Great Britain for marriage of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, reverse Westminster Abbey; copy in copper of one and a half thaler from Braunschweig-Wolfenbuttel as a medal of the 1587 coin; another, 1981, 50mm in base metal of Lugwigstrasse on Rhine 1980, musical festival; another 1961 in copper. Mostly extremely fine or better. (7)
Ernst Thalmann (16 April 1886 - 18 August 1944) was the leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) during much of the Weimar Republic. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and held in solitary confinement for eleven years, before being shot in Buchenwald on Adolf Hitler's orders in 1944. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (11 August 1778 - 15 October 1852) was a German gymnastics educator and nationalist.
