Edward VII, shilling 1910, with accompanying letter. Toned and virtually uncirculated, very rare and of great historical interest.
The letter from Commonwealth Treasury/Melbourne reads 'The accompanying shilling, which is one of a parcel of 112 - the first coins issued by the Commonwealth of Australia - is forwarded to L.Atkinson Esq with the compliments of the Ministers of State for the Commonwealth. 7th March, 1910'.
Llewellyn Atkinson (1867-1945) was born 18 December 1867 in Launceston, Tasmania. He was elected to the House of Representatives for Wilmot (Tas) in 1906 and held it until 1929. He represented the Anti-Socialist Party (1906-09), Liberal (1909-17), Nationalist (1917-21), Country (1921-28) and Nationalist (1928-29). Atkinson was appointed Vice-President of the Executive Council from February 1923 until June 1926 and in 1931 was relected as a Nationalist to the Tasmanian Legislative Council seat of Wilmot. He died aged 77 in Latrobe (Tas) in 1945.
