Estimate $1,500

SOLD $4,300

SCOTLAND, Lanarkshire, Glasgow, John Slater, no value stated, a Charles IIII Mexico City Mint eight reales, 1791 countermarked with traces of 'John Slater Glasgow' around the cancelled 5/- on the reverse, and 'Let Glasgow Flourish' and Glasgow city arms, all within linear circle on the host coin obverse, (Manville 42, Davis -). Coin fine, countermark very fine, and extremely rare.

Manville suggests an issue of about 1815-1819 but is uncertain, it could be as late 1823 or early as 1808. He records only one other known example with this countermark and this is now in the British Museum.
