Macedon, Koinon of Macedon, Pseudo-autonomous issue probably under the period of Gordian III, A.D. 238-244, AE 25, (11.56 g), obv. helmeted head of Alexander the Great to right around **ALEXANDROU*, rev. warrior or a representation of Alexander the Great on horse (Bukephalos) riding right, preparing to hurl spear, around KOINON MAKE**DONWN* (cf.S.4808, AMNG III 770, SNG Cop.1376). Dark green with earthern patina on edge, very fine and rare.

As one of his chargers, Bukephalos served Alexander in numerous battles. The value which Alexander placed on Bukephalos emulated his hero (and supposed ancestor) Achilles, who claimed that his horses were 'known to excel all others - for they are immortal'.
