Description

Macedon, Kingdom of, Alexander III, (336-323 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.80 g), Aspendus mint, posthumous issue year 31 = 182-1 B.C., obv. head of Herakles to right wearing lion skin with dotted border, rev. Zeus seated on throne to left, eagle in outstretched hand, **S*A/ MA in left field **S* reversed, MA as a monogram, to right **ALEXANDRO[U]*, (cf.S.6713, Price 2913, BMC -, Muller -, Propontis hoard 100 [same dies]). Extremely fine/good very fine, minor roughness on reverse, and extremely rare, being probably the second known example.

Ex Freeman & Sear from a hoard c.2002.
Price notes this date from the Propontis hoard which contained an example of this date. This was the last date of issue from this mint and is only known from this example and the Propontis hoard example. Propontis hoard 100 (published in RN 1979), illustrates the other known example coming from the same dies, but was noted by Price as possibly barbarous. However this being a better and clearer example confirms its authenticity as a product of the Aspendus mint.
