Commodus, (A.D. 177-192), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 189, (18.35 g), obv. laureate head of Commodus to right, around [M CO]MMODVS ANT [P FELIX AVG] BRIT, rev. around SECVRIT O[RB P M TR P XIIII] IMP VIII COS V P P, Securitas enthroned to left, holding globe, (S.5804, RIC 529, C.698, BMC 630, MIR 18, 780-6/30, Banti 381). Toned with dark green patination, weak in places of legend, otherwise good very fine and very scarce.
Ex J. Eric Engstrom Collection and from the Lepczyk Auction 61, 13th March 1985 (lot 414) and previously from the Vatican Museum as a duplicate and presented in 1907 to St. John's College, Toledo, Ohio, USA, as part of their Collection number 529. Lot includes all relevant tickets from the Vatican etc.
