Menin Gate at Midnight, by Will Longstaff, a colour print (52.5x29cm), matted under glass in a timber frame (approx 83x63cm), the frame made using timber from HMAS Sydney, c1930s, on the back is a certificate certifying that the timber is from HMAS Sydney and that the Australian War Memorial will donate portion of proceeds of funds from the sale to the R.S.S.I.L.A. and also to build a scale-model of the historic cruiser, the certificate also features an image of the new Australian War Memorial proposed to be built at Canberra, signed personally by J.L.Treloar, Director of the AWM which at the time had offices at Exhibition Buildings in Sydney and Melbourne. Extremely fine.
The artist, Will Longstaff, attended the dedication ceremony for the Menin Gate Memorial which was held on 27 July 1927 and later painted the scene as above.
