Description

A Subaltern's War, being a memoir of the Great War from the point of view of a romantic young man, with candid accounts of two particular battles, written shortly after they occurred, and an essay on militarism, by Charles Edmonds, 1st edition 1929, hardcover (14.5x21.5cm), 224pp; Ian Hamilton's March, by Winston Spencer Churchill, 2nd edition 1900, hard cover (13.5x19.5cm), 409pp + fold-out map and 32pp book catalogue at end, inside front page is written, 'W.A. Windeyer from E Windeyer 14/1/1901'. Some foxing, otherwise very good. (2)

William Archibald Windeyer was admitted as a solicitor on 22 August 1896, began practice in Sydney on his own and eventually established a law firm that continues to bear his name. On the night of 18 May 1902 Windeyer took the main part in rescuing young people from a rowing boat capsized in Fern Bay, near his Hunters Hill home, and was awarded a silver medal by the Royal Shipwreck Relief and Humane Society of New South Wales.

Elected an alderman of Hunters Hill Municipal Council in 1904, Windeyer served for twenty-three years and was mayor in 1915-24; the W. A. Windeyer Memorial Reserve was named after him. He was a director of Standard Life Association Ltd and Bain's White Ant Exterminator Co. Ltd, president of the Hunters Hill branch of the Liberal Association, a council-member of the Kindergarten Union of New South Wales, chairman of the Boy Scouts' Association from 1943, and director of and honorary solicitor to the Sydney Homoeopathic Hospital. He was appointed MBE in 1920. His work for returned servicemen was recognized in 1936 by the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia.

He was the father of Major General Sir William John Victor Windeyer KBE, CB, DSO & Bar, KC (28 July 1900 - 23 November 1987) who was an Australian judge, soldier, educator, and a Justice of the High Court of Australia.
