Pair to an Australian with the Russian Relief Force: British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19. GS-133027 Pte G.S.Hayes R.Fus. Both medals impressed, display mounted. Very fine and rare.
Stanley George Hayes, grocers assistant, age 24, born at Dubbo, NSW; Enl.05Dec1917 at Sydney, NSW; Emb.08May1918 as L/Cpl per HMAT Osterley with 3rd General Service Reinforcements; 14th Training Battalion for 55th Batalion reinforcements Codford as Pte 11Jul1918; Lyndhurst Bombing School 07-23Aug1918; L/Cpl 18Sep1918; Emb.Southampton for France 17Oct1918; to 55th Battalion 21Oct1918; to depot for return to Australia 14May1919; to England 23May1919; Demobilization Depot Weymouth and discharged from the AIF 13Jun1919 to join Russian Relief Force. No further service recorded on Australian file but note with 45th Battalion Royal Fusiliers per Sabretache July/Sept 1993.
About 200 Australians served with the Russian Relief Force, the bulk of which landed at Archangel, North Russia 6th June 1919 and on operations for about three months.
