Description

Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, (VRI) 1875-77. Js. Wm. Harris, Pty. Offr. 2nd Cls. H.M.S.Cambridge. Engraved. Ribbon original but damaged, toned, otherwise extremely fine.

Petty Officer 2nd Class James William Harris, part of his service was on HMS Liffey 19May1867-29Nov1870, then on HMS Cambridge, and then HMS Aurora 20Feb1872-20Apr1874 when he was paid off.

While Harris was serving on HMS Liffey the ship was one of the vessels in The Flying Squadron under Admiral Hornby which in 1869 made a goodwill visit to Melbourne, Sydney and then Hobart Town. The visit created great excitement and celebrations in the colonies with reports of activities published in the Sydney Morning Herald on 13 December 1869 and The Times in London on 25 January 1870.
