Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, (type 3 reverse), - four clasps - Cape Colony, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen. 4498 Serjt: W.P.Johnson. Kitchener's Horse: Impressed. Toned, good very fine.
William Percy Johnson, left his wife and seven children in Australia and travelled privately to South Africa and enlisted at Cape Town in Brabant's Horse; the unit included British, Canadian, South African colonials and Australians and saw much action against Boer commandos; the unit was disbanded in Cape Town on 31 December 1901; Johnson then transferred and served with Kitchener's Horse for eleven months and Rhodesian Police for ten months; returned to Australia on the Sophocles in February 1902, deserted his family and disappeared.
