Description
Great Britain, two new pence, 1971 (S.4235) struck incorrectly in nickel, also a two new pence, 1989 in bronze for comparison. The first with edge nicks and scuffing, otherwise very fine, the second with some tone spots, otherwise nearly uncirculated. (2)
A similar error occurred with a 1988 two new pence. In that case it was thought that a nickel blank had been left in the feed barrel used during the minting process and was included in a mint roll by accident. That coin was in mint condition and realised £1,314.50 at Charterhouse Auctions in Dorset in July 2014 on an estimate of £100-200.
