Victor Andrew Castles, born 04Nov1915 at Leichhardt, NSW; Enl.03Jun1940 at Paddington, NSW and to Showgrounds Artillery Training Depot; 17Sep1940 to 2/3rd Anti Tank Regt, 9Div at Warwick Farm, NSW; Emb.14Nov1940 for Middle East; 18Dec1940 to camp at Haifa, Palestine; operations in Libya against Italians and Germans near Tobruk from 01Apr1941; to Palestine 26Sep1941; AWL 14Oct1941 and 20-22Dec1941; sick at Barbara 16-25 Jan1942 then to garrison duty Syria and Lebanon; broke out of camp to escape arrest 13Mar1942; sick 2/8th AGH 9-16Apr1942; operations North Africa from 30Jun1942 in build-up for El Alamein; WIA 10Jul1942 near Tel El Eisa with shrapnel to back, to 2/6th AGH; to Artillery Training Depot 14Sep1942; rejoined unit in Palestine 23Dec1942; RTA 28Feb1943 and then camp at Kairi, North Qld; AWOL 23Mar1943 and 06May1943; sick 2/2nd AGH 05-21Jun1943; to 2/3rd Tank Attack Regt 22Jun1943; 26May1944 whilst on leave, the soldier died of injuries from road accident when he was crushed after a motor semi-trailer overturned at Western Road, Prospect, NSW. Medals were issued to the soldier's mother at 32 Flora St, Erskineville, NSW.
