Description

Convict token, 'MARY/MOORE' impressed into reverse of a nearly smooth Great Britain George III halfpenny, 1806 or 7. Fine.

Mary Moore was indicted for feloniously stealing, on 5th August (1794), a quart pewter pot, value 10d, a pint pewter pot, value 6d, the goods of Daniel Reeves, a publican who, when alerted to the theft, chased down the culprit and brought her back to his house and summoned the constable. After witness statements were taken, Mary Moore was charged, later convicted on 17 September 1794 at Middlesex Goal Delivery and sentenced to seven years transportation. She departed England in October 1795 aboard the convict transport Indispensable arriving at New South Wales on 30 April 1796.
