New Zealand Medal 1869, undated. Sergt-Mjr S.Horsford, A.C. Engraved. A few surface markings, otherwise good very fine.

Samuel Horsford was born at Bridgewater, Somerset, and came to New Zealand on the 'Queen of Beauty' in 1863. He was 5' 7" in height, with a fair complexion, brown hair and blue eyes. He belonged to the Church of England, his occupation was as a farmer.

On 1st September 1863, aged 21, Horsford enlisted in the 1st Waikato Regiment at Otahuhu. He was five years as a Sergeant in this Regiment, served with the Armed Constabulary, Waipiti Station, Taranaki District, where he was two years and six months a Sergeant Major. He was dismissed from the Armed Constabulary on 21 March 1873. Horsford was awarded the New Zealand War Medal for distinguished service in the field at Whakamaramara in January 1867 and at Ngatapa on 31 December 1868, and 1-4 January 1869.
