Ronald L. Holmes was born in Griffith, NSW on 18 December 1927 and at an early age his family moved to Sydney. In 1942 he enlisted in the Merchant Navy at the age of 15 and served in the Atlantic and Pacific area before being hospitalised. After discharge from hospital he enlisted with the USA Merchant Navy and was attached to Army Transport Ship No.212946 'A.T. Greylag' under the command of Master Karl H. Nehring. This was an ammunition ship bound for a secret rendezvous in the Pacific Islands when strafed by Japanese aircraft until rescued by the RAAF. On 2 May 1944 Ron Holmes was again hospitalised and subsequently discharged.
