M. Acilius, silver denarius, issued 130 B.C., 3.92 grams, Rome Mint, Crawford 255/1, Sydenham 511, B. Acilia 4, BMC 1118, Obv. M.ACILIVS.M.F. within two dotted circles around the coin, within helmeted head of Roma to r., below chin *, Rev. Hercules in walking quadriga to r., holding reins and trophy in l. hand and club in r. hand, in exergue ROMA. Toned, very fine and scarce, (1430).

Ex C.Pitchfork Collection and previously from the Duke of Northumberland Collection, sold at Sothebys, London, November 4, 1982 (lot 250 part). This is the Specimen described on p.3 by Rear Admiral Henry Smyth 'Descriptive Catalogue, A Cabinet of Roman Family Coins belonging to His Grace the Duke of Northumberland K.G.', published 1856.

The Moneyer is not otherwise known. It refers to the victory of M. Acilius Glabrio over Antiochus III of Syria in 191 B.C., after which he made a special sacrifice to Hercules on Mount Oeta.
