Description

Asia Minor, Paphlagonia, Sinope, Claudius, (41-54 A.D.), issued 41-54 A.D., AE 29, 11.38 grams, Banti-Simonetti 812, (p.237 Vol.XV) = Waddington Recueil 1976 (reprint) edn. No.94a p.204; otherwise unpublished and unlisted, Obv. Around TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR, laureate head to r. of Claudius, Rev. C.I.[F], bust of Dionysos to l. with laureate head of vine leaves. Excessively rare, good very fine/good fine with roughness on the reverse, (726).

A specimen is reported and described, as noted above by W.H. Waddington, of a coin with a diameter of 29 mms. but is not illustrated. On the evidence of this reference, Banti and Simonetti (Corpvs Nvmmorvm Romanorvm) publish the issue. It is a great rarity and is noted in the Tafel (plate) of the original owners catalogue as the reverse being of Britannicus. The evidence appears to be contrary to this attribution.
