Description
Byzantine, Justinian I, (527-565), PB (lead) Seal 18mm, (7.20 g), obv. [D]N IVSTINIANVS PP A[V], nimbate facing bust of Justinian I, wearing crown with plume and pendants and chlamys; rev. Victory advancing fascing, head right, holding wreath in either hand; crosses flanking. (BLS I 3a, Doc Fogg 6:9: 4.2). Good very fine, one of the finest known, rare.
Ex collection of Elvira Elisa Clain-Stefanelli (1914-2001) collection [as the Demarete Collection] with her numbered packet 4377. A similar CNG example in Electronic Sale 245 (lot 533) realised US$480. Justinian engaged in extensive military campaigns in Italy and North Africa. The widespread availability of this type of seal is a reflection on the growth of the military bureaucracy in the wake of the reconquest.
