Phoenicia, Arados, (2nd-1st century B.C., but dated year 197 = 63/62 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (15.35 g), obv. turreted and veiled bust of Tyche to right dotted border, rev. Nike standing to left, holding aphlaston and palm-branch, **ARADIWN* to right, to left ZqP (year 197 = 63-62 B.C.), over "daleth" over **ES*, all within laurel wreath, (S.5992, Kromann "Studies in Ancient History and Numismatics to Rudi Thomsen" (p.112 notes 3 specimens of this date and daleth, but noted only for the next year for this magistrate, cf.BMC 280-284). Lightly toned, good very fine and very scarce.

Ex Noble Numismatics Auction Sale 96 (lot 5081) and previously from Forum Ancient Coins USA. The study of this series of tetradrachms of Arados by Kromann in Thomsen (as above) shows that these civic tetradrachms began in 138/7 B.C., and continued until 44/3 B.C. She records only about 150 examples in her extensive survey.
