Description

Caria, Caunos (Kaunos), Uncertain ruler, (c.490-470 B.C.), silver stater, (11.79 g), obv. Iris with curved arms and outstretched hands in kneeling-running position to left, rev. rough triangular shape on crude incuse square, (S.-, Koray Konuk "The Early Coinage of Kaunos" in Essays Price, cf.No.14 and 15, [similar dies of obv. 1 rev.1, Pl.47, 1, SNG von Aulock 2345 [same dies], Hyla Troxell "Winged Carians" in Essays Thompson, No.1 [same dies, Pl.31]). Dumpy flan, nearly very fine and very rare.

Konuk attributed these anonymous archaic coins to Kaunos. His detailed argument is based on the reading of Carian script found on later issues of similar type to this archaic issue.
