Lot 2089
Sale 50 · Important Australian & World Coins, Medals & Banknotes
Description
Paeonia, kingdom of Patraos, (c.340-315 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (12.81 grams), obv. head of Apollo to r., with laureate, dotted border, rev. horseman spearing fallen enemy, who holds spear and shield, trident behind, around **PA[T] ROU, (Paeonian Hoard 110 same dies, S.1520). Obverse off centre, otherwise nearly extremely fine and a very rare type.
The Sotheby sale of the Paeonian hoard (London, 16th April, 1969, lot 110), had only one example of this type and it came from the same dies. This is an important type of much better style and condition than usual.
