Macedon, Mende, (465-424 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.66 grams), obv. Dionysos reclining to left on the back of an ass standing right, he holds a kantharos in right hand, rev. MENDAION around linear square within which a vine with four bunches of grapes on vine, (S.1409, Gaebler, Die Antiken Munzen Nord-Griechenlaands Vol.III [AMNG] No.20, Pl. XV, 26 [different dies], Noe [NN&M 27] No. 85, Plate IX same dies). Extremely fine/very fine and very rare.
A similar specimen from the same reverse die in the same condition, was present in the Bunker Hunt Sale of June 19, 1990 (lot 72, US $17,600), where it is illustrated in colour (see our lot. It was double struck on the reverse and consequently not as attractive as our specimen.
