Pair: British War Medal 1914-18; Mercantile Marine War Medal 1914-18.58954 Pte E.Howard. 34 Bn. A.I.F. on first medal, E.Howard. Australia. 2916. on last medal. Both medals impressed. Very fine.
Together with silver full hunter gent's pocket watch by Waltham, white dial with Roman numerals, black hands, seconds subdial, dial with hairline cracks and glass missing; large photo of the Tramways Sailors and Soldiers Association parade of personnel, Sydney.
Ernest Howard, steward, age 24, born at Plymouth in England; Enl. 20May1918 at Sydney and to Holsworthy camp; Emb.17Jul1918 with 10th NSW General Reinforcement Group; RTA 05Sep1919; Disch.20Sep1919. Did not qualify for Victory Medal 1914-19. No details of service with Mercantile Marine but researcher's notes indicate that these records are frequently incomplete and it is likely that he served with the British Merchant Navy prior to joining the AIF in Sydney, probably as a steward.
