John Murphy, a mason, age 18, born at Sunderland, County Durham (in 1881 census listed as a 13 year old errand boy); Enl.03Sep1886 in Kings Own Scottish Borderers at Newcastle-on-Tyne; previous service with Durham Artillery Volunteers militia unit; Emb.19Jul1888 for Egypt; 03Dec1888 to East Sudan and participated in the Gemaizah Campaign on 20Dec1888; on unit roll as awarded Egypt Medal with Gemaizah clasp; served in East Indies from 1890 until 1894; 01Apr1894 transferred to Army Reserve; Disch.02Sep1898.
