Description

Phoenicia, Arados, (2nd-1st century B.C., but dated year 167 = 93/92 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (14.72 g), obv. turreted and veiled bust of Tyche to right dotted border, rev. Nike standing to left, holding aphlaston and palm-branch, **ARADIWN* to right, to left Z**X*P (year 167 = 93-92 B.C.), over "aleph" over **MS*, all within laurel wreath, (S.5992, BMC 218, Duyrat 3315). Toned, nearly very fine and very scarce.

The study of this series of tetradrachms of Arados by Kromann in essays to Thomsen shows that these civic tetradrachms began in 138/7 B.C., and continued until 44/3 B.C. She records only about 150 examples in her extensive survey.
