John Leonard Van Niekerk, assayer, age 20, born at Benoni, Transvaal; member 1st Bn Wit.Rifles, attested for full-time service 26Jul1940, posted to C Coy 1st Wit.Rifles; 03Feb1941 trfd to 2nd RDLI; Emb.22Jul1941 ex Durban for Middle East; 21Jun1942 captured at Tobruk; 08Sep1942 confirmed as POW; 18Nov1942 to POW Camp 65; 31Dec1942 to POW Camp 60; Mar1943 to hospital with Malaria in POW Camp, Italy; 11May1945 released POW arrived in UK; 17Jul1945 evacuated by air to South Africa; Disch.03Jan1946 after demobilization.
