South Africa, Griqua Town, token halfpenny, undated but c.1814-6, obv. GRIQUA TOWN around 1/2, rev. flying dove (K.50; KM.Tn2). One corrosion spot on obverse, otherwise nearly fine and rare.

The first 'coinage' minted for use in South Africa, produced for Rev. Campbell of the London Missionary Society whose emblem was a dove - by Thomas Halliday. Issued between 1814 and 1816 and they circulated for around two years before most were withdrawn and melted down.
