New Zealand, Memorial Plaque WWI, named to Joseph Ward Rutledge. Good very fine.
2nd Lietenant Joseph Ward Rutledge was born in 1883, the son of a prominent New Zealand Police Sergeant Charles Rutledge from Lyttelton. Joseph was an old boy of Christ's College, and served as a gunner before he was commissioned as an officer in the RFA (Christchurch) in June 1915. He was wounded twice in January and August 1916 and KIA 31Jul1917 while with B Bty 103rd Bde, RFA. He is commemorated at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Joseph's brother Engineer Lieutenant Commander George Robert Rutledge was also KIA when his ship, HMS Laurentic, hit a mine off the Irish coast.
