Description

Group of Five to Lt Commander: 1939-45 Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45; Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Decoration (EIIR). First two medals unnamed, G.A.Johns. R.A.N.R. on third and fourth medals, 1958 on bottom reverse of last medal. The named medals impressed, the last medal engraved. Swing mounted, very fine - extremely fine.

Together with a matching set of swing mounted miniatures and a plastic, pin back name badge 'H.M.A.S.Cootamundra'.

George Alfred Johns, Master Mariner, born on 24Mar1909 at Merewether, NSW; 15Nov1939 appointed Temp Lieutenant in RANR (Seagoing); 06Jan1940 posted to HMAS Moresby, a survey vessel, as Assistant Surveyor; 21Feb1943 appointed Commander of HMAS Cootamundra, an ocean minesweeper and corvette; 23Dec1944 appointed to HMAS Kuttabul as Staff Officer; 03Jul1945 placed in command of HMAS Wilcannia, a RAN Auxiliary Ship; 06Nov1945 appointed to HMAS Rushcutter - the HQ of the RAN at Garden Island; Disch.26Nov1947; post war he continued to serve in RANVR and was appointed a Lieutenant in Nov1945 and Lt Commander in Dec1947; transferred to Retired List on 24Mar1967.
