Description
USA, 1936 Albany (New York) Charter Anniversary silver half dollar. Brilliant, uncirculated.
In a slab by NGC as MS66. Mintage was 25,013, the number melted 7,342 leaving a net distribution of 17,671. The 250th anniversary of the granting of a charter to the city of Albany was the occasion for a commemorative half dollar. The obverse shows an American beaver (Castor canadensis), common enough in the Albany area in the 17th century making it such that trapping them for their pelts was the main industry of the settlers. On the reverse, Governor Thomas Dongan bids farewell to Robert Livingston and Peter Schuyler, the latter holding the newly acquired Albany city charter of July 22, 1686. The coins were struck in October or November 1936.
