Description
Germany, Mansfeld, Hinterort Schrapplau Line, Gebhard VII, Johann-Georg I, (1546-1547), silver taler (28.45 g), dated 1547, obv. +GEBHART ET HANS GEORG, helmeted arms with half date 47 above, rev. MO N A CO ET DOMI IN MANSF EL, St. George on horse with sword attacking a dragon to left below, (D.9515 [This Coin, illustrated]). Nearly very fine/very fine, rare.
Ex Alan Jordan Collection and previously acquired from Richard Lobel of London.
Mansfeld is located northwest of Saxony in which the Harz mountains supplied an ample quantity of silver. Mansfeld coined a steady stream of talers in profusion for several centuries. The design of the obverse with helmeted arms dividing the date-or, as in this case, half date-and St George reverse, was mostly used from the earliest issue in 1521.
