Vespasian, (A.D. 69-79), silver denarius, Rome mint, issue of A.D. 69-70, (2.98 g), obv. IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head to right, rev. IVDAEA in exergue, Judaea as a mourning captive, seated to right at foot of trophy, (S.2296, RIC 15, Brin 16, BMC 37, RSC 226, H.759 [198]). Lightly toned, fine and an interesting type.
This coin was minted to celebrate the Roman victory in the first Jewish revolt, resulting in the sacking of Jerusalem and the burning of Herod's temple.
