Sale 102 · Important Australian & World Coins, Tokens, Medals & Banknotes

Description

George V, Sydney Mint specimen sovereign, 1926. Toned with full underlying mint bloom, very high rims, virtually as made and extremely rare as such.

This previously unknown example was obtained by Charles William Miller, gold assayer at the Sydney Mint at the time of closure on 11th August 1926. He was the second last member of staff to leave the Mint's employ. He handed this sovereign to his son who in his turn handed it down to his daughter who is now offering it for sale. This coin is probably, one of the last fifty sovereigns minted that day, it should be compared with the Dixson coin we sold in Sale 84 (March 2007, lot 1347) and the Bentley Collection (part 2), Baldwin's Sept 2012 (lot 743, previously ex our Sale 66, lot 1318).
