'On the 23rd of July 1921, Superintendent and Deputy Chief Constable John Allen, M.B.E., retired after over 34 years service - 31 of which had been spent at Force Headquarters. Very popular with all ranks, he was a most capable and industrious officer, for in addition to being Deputy Chief Constable, he was Chief Clerk and Force Drill Instructor. In dealing with all the activities of the Force, Mr Allen showed amazing powers of organisation and a brilliant grasp of essentials. His outstanding services were recognised by the award of the King's Police Medal in January 1919, and the M.B.E. twelve months later. He was succeeded as Deputy Chief Constable by Superintendent Levi Bowley of the Leicester Division.'
