Antoninus Pius, (A.D. 138-161), AE as, (11.16 g), Rome mint, issued A.D. 143, obv. laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right, around ANTONINVS AVG PI VS PP TR P COS III, rev. IMPERA TOR II, S C across in exergue, Victory alighting to left, wings spread, holding a shield inscribed BRI/TAN, (S.4301, RIC 732, C.442, BMC 1623). Brown patina, good fine and rare.
Ex Garth R. Drewry Collection, CNG Triton XI Sale (lot 1785 part) and previously from the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle collection, sold by heirs through Manfra Tordella and Brookes, New York in September 1968. together with Dr. Garth R. Drewry and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tickets. The issue was struck in commemoration of the victory of the governor Q. Lollius Urbicus over the Brigantes tribe in northern Britain.
