Sicily, Messina, Ferdinand II (The Catholic), (1479-1516), gold ducat, not dated, (3.41 grams), obv. crowned, seated ruler with sceptre in right hand and orb and cross in left hand, within beaded inner circle, flanked by eagles. around partial legend, + FERINANDVS [D G] R C ARA G, rev. Crowned eagle left, at feet MC, around +FERDINANDVS D G R SICILIE A, (cf.Biaggi 1356, cf.Spahr 37, Fried. 662). Slightly bent, and weak in places, otherwise fine - very fine and rare.
This coin was issued by Ferdinand the Catholic, who ruled Sicily as Ferdinand II, but was known as Ferdinand V of Castille and Leon. The legend describes him as king of Castille and Aragon as well as Sicily.
