USA, Republic of Texas, certificate number 873 for five hundred dollars of 10% stock, 5 February 1840, issued to L.Colquhoun, signed at Austin by Charles De Morse as Stock Commissioner, with attached ten signed (De Morse) numbered and dated interest coupons, certificate features a star (for the Lone Star State), a central vignette of Mercury and a sailor, and another at the left featuring a maiden and eagle, on the back an assignment signed by L.Colquhoun; Bank of Kentucky, share certificate number 1452 for fifteen shares, 13 July 1843, issued to John Rathbone Jr, signed at Louisville by Virgil McKnight, Bank President, with various vignettes. The first with numerous clean cross-cut cancellations, otherwise very fine and scarce; the second with some paper loss on edges and top right corner and some foxing, otherwise fine. (2)

Ludovic Colquhoun (1804-82) was a District Senator, one of the San Antonians taken prisoner by the Mexicans in 1842. Charles De Morse (1816-87) joined the volunteers going to the aid of Texas in 1835; he joined the Army as a Major; after serving the Republic of Texas as Stock Commissioner he served as Treasurer 1840-41; he founded the Clarkesville Northern Standard newspaper in 1842 and is known as 'The Father of Texas Journalism'; he served as a Colonel in the Confederate Army's 29th Texas Cavalry and fought at the Battle of Poison Springs.
